Autumn School of Qualitative Research

Autumn School of Qualitative Research
22-26 November 2021
Qualitative research has become increasingly relevant for biomedical research in the past decade and is expected to continue expanding its importance in the coming years. Popularity of qualitative studies is due to its flexibility and the ability to capture different types of information than quantitative studies. For example, qualitative research can help understand personal experiences related to health, such as why people do not adhere to therapy or why some health care interventions are successful and some are not. Qualitative research develops new ideas, theories and hypothesis, which can be tested in health practice. However, qualitative approach is very diverse in its application and can be difficult for the beginners.
The Autumn School of Qualitative Research (ASQR)  offers a combination of theoretical and hands-on approach for beginners in qualitative research.

Who is the School for?
The School primarily targets doctoral students and other early career researchers but is also available for others who want to learn about qualitative methods.

Where?
University of Split School of Medicine or virtual workshop (depends on the epidemiological situation in Croatia).

What can you expect from the School?
You will acquire knowledge and skills in the following topics:
  • Basics in the qualitative methodology.
  • Formulating research aims using the SPIDER approach.
  • Preparing informed consent documentation,
  • Communication skills needed to conduct interviews and focus groups,
  • Coding qualitative data,
  • Reporting results from qualitative research.

The School has an intensive hands-on approach and is structured so that brief theoretical presentations are followed by practical application in real-world examples.

Preliminary Programme

Is there a participation fee?
This is the first Autumn School of Qualitative Research and we offer it for free. The School is limited to 20 participants.

Why choose Split to learn about qualitative research?

1. Innovative, interdisciplinary programme
Experience an innovative interdisciplinary course, co-created by experts in the field and early stage researchers in order to reflect concrete practical needs in collaborative research.
2. Learn from the best
The faculty of the ASQR includes teachers and early stage researchers from the University of Split School of Medicine, who come from different scientific backgrounds and have co-created the summer school to specifically address the needs of early stage researchers. ASQR teachers thus offer deep subject knowledge that is relatable to researchers from different career stages and perspectives. All teachers have active  research experience from H2020 research grants, such as EnTIRE, VIRT2UE and SOPs4RI, which involved qualitative research methodology. They also have exceptional communication skills and passion for teaching.
3. Build your global network
Participants in the ASQR come from all over the world. You will be able to share your experiences with researchers from different research communities, which is very important in international research collaborations and global research mobility.
4. Get new perspectives and broaden your understanding of science
The ASQR is a place where you can debate and discuss different issues related to qualitative research with teachers and students from a wide range of research backgrounds. Intensive practical approach of the ASQR and small class size makes sure that broaden your outlook and sharpen your thinking and presentation skills.
5. Bring ideas to life
The ASQR is not a traditional school with university style lectures and seminars but a place for intensive group activities where we apply knowledge to practice: using with real world data in practical work.
6. Autumn in Split
By choosing the ASQR, you will be coming to the best place in autumn months. Split is a city on the Adriatic coast, and boasts more than 2000 years of history as a settlement.
