Participation in the Night of Researchers in Split

Participation in the European Researchers’ Night in Split on 25 September 2026 - 3D Organoid Models in Disease Research and the Development of New Therapies

As part of the European Researchers’ Night event, an educational and interactive activity entitled “3D Organoid Models in Disease Research and the Development of New Therapies” was held, with the aim of introducing modern biomedical research to the wider public.
Visitors were introduced to 3D organoid models, advanced laboratory models that mimic certain structures and functions of human organs and play an important role in disease research and the development of new therapies. Particular attention was given to explaining the differences between traditional 2D cell cultures and more advanced 3D models, highlighting the advantages of using these models to understand complex biological processes.
Through discussions and examples from biomedical research, visitors learned about the potential applications of patient-derived organoids (PDOs) in the development of personalized medicine. They were shown how different therapies can be tested on these models and their effects compared, with the aim of better understanding individual responses to treatment and identifying the most effective therapy for each patient. The importance of organoids as advanced models that may help reduce the need for animal testing was also emphasized.
The interactive component of the activity included educational quizzes tailored to two different age groups, allowing visitors to participate actively, test their knowledge, and acquire new information through play. The questions focused on understanding organoid models, their applications in disease research, and their potential for developing new drugs.
The activity concluded with microscopic observation of fixed 3D mouse intestinal organoid models. This gave visitors the opportunity to directly observe the appearance and structure of these laboratory models and connect the theoretical concepts presented earlier with practical examples from scientific research.
The activity aimed to stimulate public interest in modern biomedicine, raise awareness of the importance of developing advanced laboratory models, and highlight their potential in disease research, the development of new therapies, and the continued advancement of personalized medicine.
