Research
The focus of the Laboratory for Cardiometabolic Research is to investigate the ways in which various metabolic and immune system disorders such as obesity, diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, obstructive sleep apnea, etc. are related to cardiovascular diseases. The laboratory specifically focuses on the role of various serum biomarkers in predicting cardiovascular outcomes in patients with heart failure, diabetes, hypertension, myocardial infarction and many others. In addition, an additional goal of the Laboratory is to investigate the impact of lifestyle changes on cardiovascular diseases and cardiovascular risk factors. In this regard, the Laboratory is extensively researching the impact of CBD on arterial pressure and other features of vascular health. Finally, with the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic, we focused part of our research capacity on discovering the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying SARS-CoV-2 infection in patients with a severe form of COVID.

Future directions
The plans for Laboratory is to continue researching the pathophysiology of cardiovascular diseases and their connection with various metabolic disorders. First of all, the focus will be on further exploration of the impact of diabetes on heart function (diabetic cardiomyopathy) and on further research into the latent consequences of inflammatory bowel disease on the cardiovascular system.
