Second period

Results of the second project period (January - June 2011)
Validation of animal models of diabetes type 1 and 2 was completed. A reliable model of inducing two models of this disease was established, which was confirmed by observing animals, their behavior, amount of food and water intake, amount of urine and stable hyperglycemia. All this mimics symptoms of diabetes in humans.
After validation of models, we started observing animals in the planned research groups - animals with diabetes type 1 and 2 with their respective controls. Althought testing sex differences was not originally planned by our study design, higher than anticipated availability of female animals in the Animal Facility enabled us to increase the number of animals and to test our hypothesis in both sexes. Analyses of immunofluorescence and behavioral studies are under way.
Successful collaboration with the Laboratory of Biochemistry at School of Medicine in Split has been successfully continued. As a result of this collaboration, two themes for doctoral thesis will be proposed by the end of the year 2011, for young researchers affiliated with this laboratory. Another collaboration was established in this period, with the Laboratory of neurocardiology at School of Medicine in Split, whose head is Professor Ivica Grkovic. This collaboration will also include a young researcher who will work on a doctoral thesis about neurocardiology of diabetic animals.
