Fourth period
Results of the fourth project period (January - December 2012)
Analysis of CaMKII expression and behavior was completed in all animal groups, including those from experiments lasting 6 and 12 months. Results from 2-week and 2-month experiments showed that the expression of CaMKII increases in rats with diabetes type 1, comparing to the control rats. DM1 rats showed pain-related behavior characteristic for neuropathy. There was no difference in the CaMKII expression and pain-related behavior in rats with diabetes type 2. Analysis of male and female rats showed that there were no sex-related differences in CaMKII expression and pain-related behavior. A number of collaborations in Croatia and abroad have been established. Two research papers with project results have been accepted (journals: Anesthesia&Analgesia i Acta Histochemica), the third manuscript is under revision, and seven more manuscripts are currently in preparation for submission. A doctoral thesis proposal of Ms. Lejla Ferhatovic was accepted and formal public presentation of the synopsis scheduled for December 18, 2012. In total, five doctoral theses and three medical doctor theses are currently in progress based on the project output. Three more dissertations will include part of the results from our diabetic rats. Two young researchers were educated for their doctoral thesis, in a different field, on the MEMODIN project. Two new grants have been written and submitted for evaluation.
