Clinical Propedeutics is the first clinical course at the study of medicine. It represents a link between basic (e.g. physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology) and clinical medical sciences (e.g. internal medicine, infectious disease medicine, surgery). During this course, medical students will, for the first time, apply the theoretical knowledge they gained during their medical education so far in direct work with patients.
Prerequisite for attendance of this course is successful completion of the 2nd year of study.
The course is organized in the form of lectures, seminars, and practical work.
Course contents
Students will gain knowledge about clinical procedures specific to Internal medicine, supervised by the senior staff members. They will learn about symptoms and signs of the most frequent clinical conditions and diseases and, also, about methods of clinical examinations of cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, renal, endocrine, immune and haematological, musculoskeletal and neurological systems. The education is patient-based and is in great part organized in small group sessions at the bedside, with problem-based and problem-oriented learning.
Upon completion of the course, students will have been able to:
- Describe and explain symptoms and signs of the most frequent clinical conditions and diseases.
- Recognize symptoms and signs of diseases, estimate patient's clinical condition based on the direct contact with the patient
- Apply methods of clinical examination; recommend the most appropriate diagnostic methods.
- Compare symptoms and signs of the similar diseases and clinical conditions, make conclusion about the most possible diagnosis.
- Master the methods of clinical examination and perform them independently.
STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITIES
The course is organized in lectures, seminars, and practical sessions. Students should be prepared in advance for every topic to ensure their active participation and optimal transfer of knowledge. In case of absence, students have to take oral colloquium of the missed topic no later than 7 days before the exam.
EXAM
Requirement for taking the final exam is orderly attendance to all teaching activities during the course. The exam is in the form of written test, which contains 60 questions. All questions are multiple choices with one correct answer out of 5. Students have 60 minutes for completing the test. Minimum of 40 correct answers (65%) are required for passing the test. The grades correspond to the test points in the following manner:
40-45 correct answers = sufficient (2)
46-50 correct answers = good (3)
51-55 correct answers = very good (4)
55-60 correct answers = excellent (5)
Students who pass the written exam may take the practical and oral exam
on the next day.
Location of the written exam: Great Lecture Hall Križine (Velika predavaonica Križine).
Locations for the practical and oral exam: Internal Medicine Clinic and Cardiology Clinic in the Hospital Firule and Križine.
