Course Internal Medicine

Course Internal Medicine

The principles of the practicals (exercises) of the course Internal Medicine Rotations are the independence of the student when working with the patient, with expert guidance from the attending physician. The student integrates acquired knowledge and skills and applies them in working with patients, thus participating in taking anamnesis, examining the patient, and deciding on further treatment and diagnostic procedures. Therefore, the student should perform an independent examination and history, along with a proposal for diagnosis and treatment under the control of the attending physician.

The courses are held at the emergency hospital admissions for internal medicine/neurology/pulmology, and for infectious disease, at the Department of Critical Internal Medicine of the Central Hospital Emergency Admission of the University Hospital of Split (internal medicine, pulmology, neurology, and cardiology), and at the Emergency Admission of the Clinic for Infectious Diseases of the University Hospital of Split

If there are no patients in the emergency departments, students can, with permission, examine in-hospital patients at the clinics (e.g. if there are no patients at the Emergency Admission, the student can go to the ICU or to the ward if there are interesting patients).

The course (practicals) takes place at specific locations at the University Hospital of Split:

1) Department of Critical Internal Medicine of Central Hospital Emergency Admission of the University Hospital of Split (at Firule location) -  100 school hours - 80% of practicals (internal medicine, pulmology, cardiology, and neurology)

2) Emergency infectious disease admission ward at the Clinic for Infectious Diseases of the University Hospital of Split (at Krizine location) - 25 school hours - 20% of course

The course has a total of 130 hours, of which 125 school hours of exercises (practical clinical skills) and 5 hours of seminars. Attendance is mandatory; absences are compensated in accordance with the chiefs of course. The presence and duration of the exercises have to be recorded on a special form that the student carries (“Internal Medicine Evidence”) signed by the emergency doctor on duty in hospital (regardless of status) at the work site where the student spent hours of exercises. A resident can lead students during the work day, with the superscript of the senior specialist (evidence must be certified with the signature or co-signature of the specialist with STAMP). In addition, during the course, the student should independently perform a defined number of procedures (skills), which are recorded and signed by the emergency doctor on duty in the hospital on a special form (“Internal Medicine Procedures”) that the student carries. It is necessary to perform a certain minimum number of procedures.

Seminars will be held during June (exact term will be previously agreed upon with the chiefs of the course). Seminars are problematic: the teacher presents (simulates) the case, and students (divided into groups) try to resolve the problem with virtual patients (simulation cases). Students do not prepare seminars.
