1. Pharmacology

1. GENERAL OBJECTIVES  
Upon completion of the course, students should acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes in basic pharmacology that will enable them effective participation in later clinical courses. This includes basic principles in general pharmacology, drug administration, mechanisms of action, therapeutic and side effects, indications and contraindications of representative drugs affecting major organ systems. Students will also gain practical competence in drug prescribing.

2. STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITIES
The course is delivered through lectures, seminars, and laboratory exercises with experimental animals and computer simulations. Students should prepare themselves in advance for active participation in seminars and exercises. Absence from seminars and exercises have to be compensated by oral colloquium latest 7 days before the exam.

Additional texts

• only one correct answer out of 5 choices;
• one or more correct answers out of four numerated choices;
• recognition of the two statements as true or false. In the case that both statements are considered true, it needs to be distinguished whether the second statement explains the first statement or the second statement is not directly related to the first statement.

Students have 120 minutes for completing the test. A minimum score of 65 correct answers is required for passing. The marks of the written exam correspond to the test score as follows:
95-110 excellent (5)
85-94 very good (4)
75-84 good (3)
65-74 sufficient (2)

The oral exam consists of 3 questions that are pulled by the student from three different sets of questions.

2. Rational pharmacotherapy

1. COURSE OBJECTIVES:
After passing the exam, the student has practical knowledge of indications, contraindications, and guidelines for the rational use of drugs and knowledge of the principles of pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of drugs applied in special groups of patients. The student has practical knowledge of side effects and drug interactions and is able to recognize unnecessary drug use. The student is also trained in the correct calculation of doses and writing prescriptions for various forms of drugs and the use of quality sources of pharmacological literature.

2. LEARNING OUTCOMES:
KNOWLEDGE
1. Describe and explain the general principles of drugs actions (pharmacodynamics) and fate of drugs in organism (pharmacokinetics) in special populations (the pregnant, during lactation, children, elderly, patients with impaired renal and hepatic function).
2. List and explain the most important guidelines for certain pharmacotherapeutic classes in the rational pharmacotherapy.
3. Describe and explain side effects of the drugs that are illustrative example of certain pharmacotherapeutic groups and subgroups.
4. Review significant drug interactions and relate them with the drugs pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties.
5. Describe the most clinically significant drug poisonings and treatment of poisoned patients.
SKILLS
1. Calculate the drug dose in rational drugs dosage regimen.
2. Properly write prescriptions for finished, magistral and galenic medicines using e-prescribing concept.
3. Utilize relevant national and international drug databases.
4. Develop skills and attitudes needed to recognize and avoid incorrect prescribing.

6. EXAM:
Requirement for taking the final exam is orderly attendance to all teaching activities during the course. The exam is a quiz that includes examples from clinical practice with the recognition of the situation and the proposal of rational pharmacotherapy solutions.
